Macedonia's Most Spectacular Carved Iconostasis

これは何ですか?

The Church of Sveti Spas (Holy Savior) is one of Macedonia's most treasured Christian monuments, famous above all for its extraordinary carved wooden iconostasis — a screen separating the nave from the altar, carved over five years by master craftsmen Makarija Frčkoski and his sons. The church is built partially underground, as during the period of its construction it was forbidden by law to build a Christian church taller than a man on horseback. The result is a beautiful, intimate stone sanctuary in the heart of the Old Bazaar quarter.

なぜ行くべきか?

The iconostasis is simply one of the finest examples of Macedonian woodcarving anywhere in the world. Over 10 metres wide, teeming with biblical scenes, vines, animals, and angels rendered in extraordinary detail — it leaves visitors speechless. The church also holds the tomb of Goce Delčev, the great Macedonian revolutionary hero.

The church is built below street level — its roof barely reaches the height of the surrounding ground. This was required by Ottoman law, which forbade Christian buildings from exceeding the height of a man on horseback.

歴史と背景

Built in the 17th century during Ottoman rule, the church's below-ground construction was a necessity of the time — Christian buildings could not be taller than a mosque. The iconostasis was carved between 1819 and 1824 by the renowned Frčkoski master woodcarvers from the Mavrovo region. The church was also the resting place chosen for Goce Delčev, the founder of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO), after his remains were returned from Bulgaria.

実用情報
