Old Bazaar (Čaršija)

Stretching from the Stone Bridge to the hills beyond, the Old Bazaar (Stara Čaršija) is one of the most authentic and atmospheric old markets in the Balkans. Dating back at least to the 12th century, it houses copper craftsmen, leatherworkers, jewellers, traditional Macedonian restaurants, and atmospheric coffee houses — all within a labyrinthine network of cobblestone lanes where Cyrillic signs point the way.

You could spend an entire day here and barely scratch the surface. The scent of grilled meats and Macedonian coffee in the morning, the sound of copper craftsmen in the afternoon, the electric energy of its bars and restaurants at night. The Old Bazaar isn't a tourist attraction — it's a living, breathing heart of a city that has been trading here for a thousand years.

The Old Bazaar's history stretches back to at least the 12th century, with trading activity predating written records. At its peak it was the commercial heart of the entire Balkan region — Macedonian craftsmen, merchants and artisans filling its stone-paved lanes with the sounds and scents of a city at its most alive.

实用信息

Cross the Stone Bridge from Macedonia Square and you're in the heart of it. No admission. Most shops open 9am–6pm, restaurants and bars until midnight or later. Best explored on foot — wear comfortable shoes. Haggling is acceptable in craft shops.
