Skopje, Macedonia

History & Landmarks

Two thousand years of empires, earthquakes and rebuilding, in one walkable old town.

Skopje has been rebuilt more times than almost any European capital - by Roman engineers, Ottoman sultans, Yugoslav planners and, after the devastating 1963 earthquake, the whole city at once. That layered history is still visible within a few hundred meters of the Vardar river, where a Roman-era stone bridge, an Ottoman fortress and a centuries-old bazaar all sit within walking distance of each other. These are the 3 landmarks that tell that story best.
