What is it?

Perched on a hill overlooking the entire Skopje valley, Kale Fortress is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Balkans. Human habitation here dates back to 4000 BC — long before recorded history. The current Byzantine-era walls look out over the ancient Church of St. Spas below.

Why go?

The view from the top of Kale is the view that has inspired conquerors, traders, and poets for millennia. Stand here and understand why Skopje was always a city worth fighting for. Bring a camera — and take the time to explore the excavations of houses dating back to 6th century BC.

💡Did you know?

Archaeologists have found evidence of continuous human settlement on this hill dating back to 4000 BC — making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in the Balkans, older than Rome or Athens.

History & background

The site has been continuously inhabited since the Neolithic period (4000 BC). The Paeonian kingdom, then Alexander's Macedonia, then Rome, and Byzantium all left their mark on these stones. The Byzantine-era walls that stand today were built to defend the crossroads of the ancient Vardar valley trade route.

Practical information

A short walk from the Old Bazaar, uphill from the Church of St. Spas. Free entry. Open 9am–7pm. Allow 1–2 hours. Good footwear recommended. The walk up takes about 15 minutes from Stone Bridge.

The name itself — "karpino" means rock in Macedonian — channels the ancient geological energy of Macedonia's stone landscapes into a modern wellness sanctuary. The studio's signature aesthetic: warm amber-lit vertical slatted walls that evoke the glow of ancient caves, combined with precision-crafted treatments that restore body and spirit.

Stone Bridge

The Icon of Skopje

The Stone Bridge (Камен Мост) is Skopje's most iconic landmark — a 15th-century stone bridge stretching 214 metres across the Vardar River with 12 graceful semicircular arches. It forms the symbolic boundary between the modern city centre and the ancient Old Bazaar (Čaršija), and has stood as a testament to Macedonian resilience for six centuries.

Old Bazaar (Čaršija)

A Living Marketplace Since the 12th Century

Stretching from the Stone Bridge to the hills beyond, the Old Bazaar (Stara Čaršija) is one of the most authentic and atmospheric old markets in the Balkans. Dating back at least to the 12th century, it houses copper craftsmen, leatherworkers, jewellers, traditional Macedonian restaurants, and atmospheric coffee houses — all within a labyrinthine network of cobblestone lanes where Cyrillic signs point the way.
