Frequently asked questions
Is Skopje worth visiting?+
Absolutely. Skopje offers an extraordinary blend of ancient Ottoman bazaars, Byzantine history, dramatic modern architecture, and genuine Balkan warmth — all at a fraction of Western European prices. Most visitors say they wish they had stayed longer.
How many days do you need in Skopje?+
Two to three days covers the main attractions well: Macedonia Square, Stone Bridge, the Old Bazaar, Kale Fortress, and Mother Teresa Memorial in the city. Add a day trip to Matka Canyon or Vodno Mountain for the full experience.
Is Skopje safe for tourists?+
Yes, Skopje is generally very safe for tourists. The main risk is petty theft in crowded areas — use common travel sense: keep valuables secure in the Old Bazaar and on public transport. The city centre is safe to walk at night.
Does EU roaming work in Macedonia?+
No. Macedonia is not an EU member, so EU "roam like at home" rules do not apply. You will face expensive international roaming charges. We strongly recommend getting an eSIM before you travel — see our eSIM guide.
What language is spoken in Skopje?+
The official language is Macedonian. Albanian is also widely spoken in certain areas. English is widely understood in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants in the city centre. The younger generation especially speaks good English.
What currency is used in Macedonia?+
The Macedonian Denar (MKD). Approximate rate: 1 EUR ≈ 61 MKD, 1 USD ≈ 57 MKD. Get cash from ATMs on arrival — many small shops and markets prefer cash. Cards are accepted in most restaurants and larger shops.
