The Triumphal Gate of Modern Skopje

What is it?

Porta Macedonia (Gate of Macedonia) is a monumental triumphal arch standing 21 metres tall at the south end of Macedonia Square, built in 2012 as part of the Skopje 2014 urban transformation project. Its four facades are covered with 33 marble relief panels depicting key moments in Macedonian history — from Alexander the Great through Ottoman rule to independence. Lit dramatically at night, it has become one of Skopje's most photographed landmarks.

Why go?

Whether you find it audacious or awe-inspiring, Porta Macedonia is impossible to ignore. The reliefs are a crash course in Macedonian history, and the arch frames the pedestrian boulevard perfectly. Best photographed at dusk when the warm floodlights make the white marble glow gold.

History & background

Designed by architect Valentina Stevanovska, Porta Macedonia was unveiled in June 2012 as the signature gateway of the Skopje 2014 project — a €500 million initiative to give Skopje a classical architectural identity. The 33 bas-relief panels narrate events from ancient Macedonia through to 1991.
