The Skyline Cross Above Skopje

What is it?

Mount Vodno dominates the Skopje skyline, and at its peak stands the Millennium Cross — 66 metres tall, one of the largest Christian crosses in the world, erected in 2002 to mark 2,000 years of Christianity in Macedonia. A cable car whisks visitors from mid-mountain to the peak in minutes.

Why go?

The panoramic view from the Millennium Cross on a clear day is extraordinary — you can see the entire Skopje valley, the distant mountains, and on perfect days even beyond. Combine with a hike along the ridge to Matka Canyon (11km) for a full day of adventure.

History & background

The Millennium Cross was erected in 2002 to commemorate the 2,000th anniversary of Christianity and the 1,000th anniversary of the Macedonian Ohrid Archbishopric — one of the oldest Orthodox Christian archbishoprics in the world. It remains the most visible landmark in the entire Skopje valley.
