Skopje Neighbourhoods
Five areas, five different ways to experience the city. Here is what each one is actually like.
Skopje is compact enough to walk between most of its areas, but each one has its own character. Here is what to expect from the five areas visitors actually spend time in, and who each one suits.
The five areas
Best for: atmosphere and foodAtmosphere and food, on the north bank
Stara Carsija - the Old Bazaar
Stara Carsija, Skopje's Old Bazaar, is an Ottoman-era quarter on the north bank of the Vardar and one of the largest surviving bazaars in the Balkans. Walk through it and you pass mosques, old hans, coppersmiths' workshops, teahouses and some of the best cheap grilled food in the city. Streets are cobbled and steep in places. It is quieter at night than you might expect, since much of it closes early.
Best for: first-timers who want to be centralThe monumental core, on the south bank
Centar - Macedonia Square
Centar is Skopje's monumental core on the south bank, built around Macedonia Square. This is the Skopje people argue about: the Skopje 2014 programme filled it with neoclassical facades, bronze statues and fountains, built over and around the modernist city that replaced what the 1963 earthquake destroyed. Whatever you make of it, it is walkable, central, and where most hotels are.
Best for: food and eveningsThe dining and drinking quarter
Debar Maalo
Debar Maalo is Skopje's dining and drinking quarter, a short walk west of the centre. Low-rise streets and plane trees line family kafeanas standing next to natural wine bars and speciality coffee shops. This is where locals actually eat. It is a good base if you want somewhere with a pulse in the evening.
Best for: space and a slower paceResidential, green, and rising towards the mountain
Kapistec and the Vodno foothills
Kapistec and the surrounding Vodno foothills are residential, greener and quieter than the centre, rising towards the mountain. This is a good choice if you want space and a morning walk, or a cable car ride up Vodno, rather than nightlife on your doorstep.
A large residential district for long stays and value
Aerodrom
Aerodrom is a large planned residential district south east of the centre - modern blocks, wide streets, cheaper stays, and ordinary Skopje life. It suits a longer stay and better value more than a two-night trip. Despite the name, it is not next to the airport.
